Paste a confusing formula and get a plain-English walkthrough

Inherited a spreadsheet full of nested formulas? Paste one in and ask the AI to explain it step by step, in plain language.

Before

What does this formula do?

After

I inherited an order sheet from a colleague who has left. Column A has product codes, column C has quantities, and there's a separate tab called Prices. Cell F2 has this formula: =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A2, Prices!$A:$C, 3, FALSE) * (1 - IF(C2>=100, 0.1, 0)), "Check SKU") Explain what it does in plain English, one step at a time, from the inside out. Then tell me: 1. What result I'd see for an order of 150 units of a product that costs $8. 2. When it would show "Check SKU". 3. Anything about it that could cause problems later.

Why it works

Nested formulas are hard to read because you have to hold every piece in your head at once. Asking for an inside-out walkthrough breaks it into small steps, and a worked example with real numbers shows whether you've understood it. Asking about risks often turns up things like hard-coded numbers that someone will forget to update.

Your prompt

Here's a formula from my [Excel or Google Sheets] file. Column [letter] has [what it holds] and column [letter] has [what it holds]. [paste the formula] Explain what it does in plain English, step by step, from the inside out. Then walk through one example with real numbers, and point out anything that could cause problems later.

Variations

Make it simpler

Is there a simpler formula that does the same thing? Show it, and explain what's different.

Document it for the next person

Write a two-sentence note I can put next to this formula so the next person understands it without asking.
