One-page budget request memo
Make the case for new spending in one page, with the problem, the cost, the options you considered and what you're asking for.
The prompt
Help me write a one-page memo asking for budget. The reader is busy and will decide based on this page alone. Who decides: [their role and what they care about, for example cost control, growth, risk] What I'm asking for: [the amount and what it pays for] The problem it solves: [what's happening now and what it costs us in time, money or risk] Options I considered: [including doing nothing, with rough costs] Expected benefit: [what changes, and any numbers you have] Timing: [when you need a decision and why] Structure: 1. The ask, in one sentence, at the top. 2. The problem, in three sentences or fewer. 3. Options compared in a small table: cost, benefit, risk. 4. My recommendation and why. 5. What I'll report back on and when. Keep it under 350 words. Use my numbers only. Where I haven't given one, mark it [number needed] instead of inventing it. Then list the two toughest questions the decision-maker is likely to ask and how I might answer them.
